The
new era begins...
So the new manager is safely installed; what impact is he going to have? BLUES Magazine takes a look in the latest issue with views from Colin Tattum, the chief football writer of the Birmingham Mail, radio presenters Tom Ross and Paul Franks and ex-Blues captain Ian Clarkson.
And the unanimous view is, let the good times roll!
“McLeish doesn’t see problems, he doesn’t see or feel fear, he sees challenges - and relishes taking them on,” says Colin Tattum.
“During the first few weeks, McLeish and his coaches set about restoring the belief among the Blues squad. They encouraged them to be comfortable on the ball, have faith in their own ability, and do not worry about what they are up against in the Premier League.”
BBCWM’s Paul Franks says, “The appointment of the former Scotland boss as manager looks to be a masterstroke. The fans I speak to on the Friday football phone-in on BBCWM have been re-energised by the change.
“Now there’s a breath of fresh air, not only because of a new manager but because he’s brought a more positive approach. He wants to play football and the fans are starting to believe.”
And fellow radio presenter, Tom Ross at BRMB says, “Alex McLeish is without doubt single-minded, focused and as determined a man as anyone I have ever met.
“My message to Alex and his team is that this is a great club with magnificent fans, whose loyalty is beyond question by anyone. They have stuck by the club through thin and thinner in over 125 years of winning nothing.
“They deserve some success.”
Ian Clarkson, who played for the club under four different managers at Blues gives the inside story of what it’s like when a new manager arrives. And believes McLeish, as well as transforming Blues on the pitch, has given the current board a new energy.
“What’s to say McLeish’s arrival won’t give the current board a renewed enthusiasm to take the club forward and compete with the Newcastles, Evertons and, yes, Villas for a place in the top ten,” says Clarky.
Also in the magazine is an exclusive interview with Mehdi Nafti ahead of the African Cup of Nations; we hear from Stuart Parnaby, back in first team contention; there’s a look at the 250 greatest ever goals by Blues and we look ahead to the FAB-ulous clash coming up between Fabrice Muamba and Cesc Fabregas at the Emirates on 12th January.
There’s a look back to the good old days of the FA Cup Third Round, a seb-sational poster of Seb Larsson’s match-winning stunner at White Hart Lane, an interview with Blues legend, Paul Devlin, as well as all the usual favourites - posters, match reports, fans’ views, news from inside St. Andrew’s and more.
